Currently running a Phenom X4 9950 @ 3.12 Ghz it copes admirably with most things and have not really seen a lot of point in upgrading but the Phenom IIs are getting quite cheap for stock clocks that are faster than my OC'ed chip and I was thinking of picking one up to extend the life of my Gaming PC before the new chip come out and supply of Penoms start to dry up.

my board is an Asus M3N sli board does all I need and will support an x6, do these newer chips really need DDR3 and more importantly will I see much of a jump in performance going from the original Phenom to a Phenom II, I have a water coooled setup so will be looking to overclock and would hope to reach ~4Ghz.

Anyone else done similar who might be able to comment on possible success, most O/Cs seem to run DDR3 etc, if I have to go to the effort of changing board/memory I wouldn't bother or would probably go Intel ultimately.

You will notice a 5-10% difference using ddr3 in synthetic benchmarks, whether it will actually matter for other stuff you use it for is more of an unknown.

I thought as much, thanks, think I'll take a punt, it's bound to end up quicker than what I have and I am pretty happy with it that be honest.
