Heyo!

I'm considering an upgrade to my X2 4400+ to a shiny Phenom II , thing is that at the moment I only have a 450W PSU and it's powering a 8600GT and 2.2Tb of hard disk..

Think I have enough power or should I upgrade my PSU as well?

Damn that took a long time to type using dvorak!
Thanks :)

I don't see why everyone buys such huge power supplys, 450w will be *plenty.

*unless it's a cheap ass unit or you add 10 drives to your setup! :)

The bigger the PSU (assuming it's not one of the explosives that OcUK used to stock) the less stressed it will be under heavy load, and the less noise it will make as it requires less cooling.

Also, stick a couple of beefy graphics cards into your box and it immediately starts sucking up to 700W. Which is quite a lot.

450W is fine for what you have + a phenom II.

You wont need to upgrade the PSU untill you upgrade your graphics card (assuming you get a power hungry one :p)

Take a look - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17957765

People don't realise how little power they actually draw, even a gaming rig at full blast doesn't need that much juice unless you're going mental with crossfire or sli, even then figures of 700w seem ridiculous.

I'm building a machine that will idle at ~35-40w and peak at ~65-70w and that'll handle anything other than games (which it will do but doesn't need to). :)
