Death Star or Mount Doom, it depends on the day.
Hi would the new phenom quad core be compatible with my motherboard :-
Asus M2N32-SLi-DLX nForce 590 SLi
If not could you tell me which motherboard i would need

Im not sure if your board is compatible but if not and you were going to buy a new board and then a Phenom I think you would be better going down the Intel route instead.

Well the new phenom 9600 is out next week and they currently dont have any mobo on sale for it. However if you go on the Asus website it says that my current mobo is dual core, but if its the same socket e.g. AM2 why wont it be compatible? Me is confused! I want a quady!

Well the ASUS site will stay out-of-date for a while. But AMD have said that Phenom will run fine in AM2 boards, albeit with a couple of features not available (the new HT link etc).

Bios update maybe. :)

Yeah, what a great read. Hmm, this site says this, I'll use that as fact.
Had to laugh at this quote:

AMD, instead of going forwards, seems to be going back. Soon a whole generation of AMD fans will be back using abacuses.

 I mean... really? So AMD have released something that's better clock for clock than their old product and also has 2 more cores and it's a massive step backwards?
Far too much doom and gloom around these days.
Ahh, the launch speeds weren't over 3ghz! It's the end of AMD forever!!!11One

Don't forget, these are the same people who will whine and complain when Intel has free run of the market and CPUs start at £400.

I still think as an upgrade option for existing AM2 users the Phenom is a good way to go, once we see good stocks in shops then it could still be the cheapest quad setup to build.
We should be happy that after months of delay these CPU's are actually out, once some of the newer steppings trickle through I'll be interested to see what clocks they can achieve.

I'm still waiting for a proper review., most of the current reviews are biased towards intel. As they use simple/old programes or games in low detail. So the brute force of the intel shines. The few testes I have seen against complex programs Phenom is on par with intel.

Have to wait and see what the reviews and the price do over the next two months as amd starts to shift in large quantities.

But at the moment intel is the way to go, if you have to change mobo.

Well Crysis runs ok on my setup (DX9 64 in vista 64) the old slow down. And I game at 1920 x 1200. Im getting 25+ FPS

So Im going to wait for a few months to upgrade. Let things settle down.

I think people need to get realistic, once the next stepping is introduced with speed ramps at lower volts the Phenom will be a very attractive piece of kit especially as a long term option.

An AM2+ crossfire board will last you years, unless you really think a years time you'll be needing DDR3 to run your desktop apps... *roll*

Yes Intel have the edge on average but clock for clock its not a lot, once we start seeing speed ramps and clocking of the 0.9-1.0v part I think the gap will close. Sure Intel are releasing a new chip soon but what desktop requires that kind of power? Sorry I forgot those web browsers don't half crunch numbers. ;)

lol, dont even need DDR2, I have 1gb DDR ram and it does everything fine :)

Im sure DDR2 would do everything a million times faster though :p
