Ive just bought an AMD Phenom 9950 Black Edition 2.6GHz much to some people on the forums dismay :p Ive read a few reviews saying it overclocks well and then people have been telling me the exact opposite on the forums. Has anyone had any experience with overclocking this CPU (or other Phenoms) im saving for a compatible motherboard to arrive so i cant test it myself atm.

Thanks

Depends on what chip you get. Some report a max of ~3Ghz whilst some are getting over 3.4Ghz with good cooling. It really is a lucky dip, as with all chips.

The phenoms aren't actually bad chips it's just AMD messed up the southbridge. The old 600 series southbridge was a load of nuts, the newer 700/750 is supposed to be much better (but pricey)

the Asus M3A79 T-Deluxe will be Priced around £130 and will be available (According to another Website from 24/09/08) these SB750 boards are not all priced at £200

I very nearly bought a 9950be & the above mobo but got impatient because the Delivery date changed a couple of times so upped my budget and went and got a Q9550/X48 instead.

You can get a Q6600 and X38 Mobo that costs the same as a 9950be & 790fx SB750

The Q6600 has been rock solid for ages but there is plenty of people on here recently who have said they dont clock as well as they used to.

With the new Mobo the 9950be will hit 3.4ghz with ACC switched on & possibly more.
I appreciate theres a lot of people on here who own the Intel Chip but at this price point there really isnt any difference & to suggest one is more inferior than the other smells of a little Bias to me....

Enjoy your Phenom matey im sure it will do just fine.

i get 3ghz with 1.37v on a 32bit os. but on a 64bit os it needs more volts, about 1.45v... im hoping the 750sb chipset will fix that for 64bit os.

That mobo sounds like the way to go! Thanks very much mate im sure ill be pleased with how it eventually turns out :D

the best bet is to wait a while, the 790fx/sb750 mobos are quite rare at the moment, and those that do have some in stock have them at ridiculous prices like the foxconn that oc'uk have in stock. watch out though as AOD Extreme will not be implemented on all mobos as standard, its optional (that vendors can chose to have it).

I get 3055Mhz with 1.4v cpu, 1.365v nb, 235 fid, 13x multi. I suspect I can go higher but don't bother. Stable and all I wanted was 3Ghz...

That is on the ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe Wifi AP jobbie, using a Ultra 120 Extreme for cooling;

regards,
J.
