Whats the Phenom quad 9600 CPU like - is it any good, can it be locked etc

Just been given a stripped down Gateway fx7020 (Box, PSU, CPU, RAM, Mobo and GPU) which would install windows etc but not install any updates/self extract files - thats all the info I have at the moment.

Anyone heard of this issue before - with Vist X32 Home premium

Any ideas/help appreciated, ta.
 
You got 9600's in "normal" and Black Edition, BE's have an unlocked multi but... Well, they weren't much more amazing for overclocks...

It's an alright CPU, you WANT to overclock it though, the default 2.3ghz is just not great. Mine goes to about 2.6/2.7 before I decide it's a power wasting oven.
They got trashed when they were out as they use a bit of power and weren't too fast. Also suffered from the (massively overhyped) TLB glitch. I've never experienced it and since I'm not running virtual machines at home, I never will.

I've seen Vista do that before but it sorted itself out when left overnight, not really a solution... If it's not installing anything, try re-registering installer I guess?
I take it Vista is activated?
