oh hai....

Should these two players be picked as wildcards for the World Cup?

I have watched Phil Jones play at Bluckburn a couple of times now and he does look really good, what are peoples opinions on him and would you take him on the plane?

Sam for Johnson, he does look good and seems the most onform winger we have atm, I would take him to South Africa.

We can't rely on the fitness of Lennon, the only other Winger I can think of thats in some form is Milner, him and Johnson would be good as they can play both wings.

Opinions?

Johnson is good

Who on earth is Jones? I've never even heard of him.

He helped keep Utd and Chelsea at bay at home for Blackburn, really does look very good, if the English have learnt anything, its not to put a huge load of pressure on a kid for no reason. He's not experienced, he's played well with one of the best home form teams this year, but the fact that England won't do anything in this world cup, added to the likelyhood of him getting games, IE none, means all the media crap won't do him any good, though unlike Walcott he's actually talented at what he does, still stupid to put pressure on him when he won't even be played.

As for Johnson, meh, he's had some ok performances against some awful sides, even against Burnley he constantly went with the wrong option, frequently shoots when theres stupidly better options on, twice in that game a simple square ball would have got them tap ins and he blasted at the goal from bad angles and didn't get close.

He's ok, but not at all great, though he's better than SWP/Theo/Joe Cole and not as much as a pratt as Bentley.

Johnson would be a far better choice than quite a few people who are likely to get in the squad, again he'd be VERY unlikely to start games if he went, so who really cares.

I still don't get why Upson is preferred to Dawson.

I certainly wouldn't take Bentley though. He's too slow for international football.

who else is there?

On the wing?

Downing, Young, Milner, Walcott - and I've not even got beyond clubs beginning with "A" yet!

In all seriousness though, I'd say realistically in a world cup squad you would take 4 widemen, plus maybe 1-2 versatile players in other positions who can cover if necessary. So for England you'd expect this to be:

Lennon
Cole
Downing
Young
Beckham/Bentley/Walcott/Milner/Johnson

Now based on that you'd say Milner is probably in the box seat, by the time you've crammed in the centre the likes of Gerrard, Lampard, Barry, Carrick etc there really isn't any more room in midfield.

For players like Johnson this WC is too soon in my eyes, he's uncapped and doesn't really have many opportunities left to prove himself in an England shirt. Age is on his side and future tournaments would be more likely as some others start to fade.

Wouldn't even take Gerrard based on this season he's been dire for the majority and been non existent in he England games too.

Yeh I think you lot are probably right, too early for Jones at least, hopefully he will be a very good replacement for Terry/Ferdinand in 2014.

Shawcross and Gary Cahill are good shouts. Rodwell is another good young talent, is he playing full-time at Everton yet?

Johnson I would give a squad place to.

Atleast there seems to be one or two English talent coming through at prem clubs, was getting worried that Terry, Ferdinand, Gerrard, Lampard etc would need to play for England at 40 lol.

Johnson I'd take over Downing. He's a player that can come on and change a game, especially with his pace. Downing has become a player that has lost all pace and can only make a 6 yard pass. Gone so down hill it's unbelievable.

Johnson yes, Jones no.

I know this is slightly OT, but Joe Cole has to go if fit as well. He's got better technique than the rest of our team combined (possibly with the exception of Rooney).
