I was looking at this tv because of the mcdonalds prize thingy and noticed that the res is stated as 1024x1080i, so how can it be called hd ready when it cant even manage 1280x720?

HD ready is specified as 720 horizontal lines. There is no spec for the other direction. 1280 is common as using square pixels gives the 16:9 ratio, but many plasmas use 1024 rectangular pixels. In practice it makes very little difference.
