Can someone advise me on this system.
I have one of these 'bar' type light fittings that has five separate fittings along it.
If I put Philips Hue in them can each individual light be set separately for brightness colour etc?

On the other hand, is it also possible to group them together as well if desired?

Yes both are possible. You can group them together and then use that group in as many "recipes" as you like all with customised brightness and colour settings per bulb.

You can also add them in to more than one group should you wish and have recipes that set them along with other lights.

If you want a second opinion then it's exactly what Eddie182 said! The only thing to add (and I'm sure you already know this by now) is that you'll need the Hue app on either iOS or Android in order to get the most from the bulbs.

Thanks all.
Small issue I found. The current fittings are the smaller e14 screw, rather than the expected e27! Been a while since I bought any lamps for it!

Other than the cosmetics of it, any reason though why I could not just use an e14 to e27 adaptor, of which there seem to be plenty?
As said, not bothered with how they look as it is a study. Just want more controllable lighting as I use it for still life photography too.
All safe I assume?

You have two options, you can use an adaptor. This will prob cause the bulb to come quite far out of the fitting. Second option is lightify E14 bulbs. They are white only but you can dim and set colour temp. They need up to date firmware to not have glitches with hue. If you can live with the adaptor it is best, as Phillips have in the past stopped non-Phillips bulbs working with the bridge and then fixed this when users rightly spat the dummy. Who knows if they may do something like that again.

If you need to update the lightify firmware you can use a lightify bridge which can be had for about £20.

Sorry to drag this thread back up, but just a couple of questions and clarifications again.

Are the smart bulbs themselves capable of on/off functions?
I.e can I leave the mains to a floor lamp on and just use the app to control whether the light is on?
Is this also workable for normal ceiling lights, leaving the wall switches on, and just controlling the bulb(s) via the app?

This is the part I am most interested in, if possible.

Lightify is mentioned above. Is this the Osram version? Not find many places that seem to sell this.

Yeah, the lights work best if you leave them turned on at a switch and just use the app to control them. If you turn a light off at the switch, and then back on again they return to 100% brightness - not their last setting.

I personally wouldn't have them in ceiling lights, my initial plan was to do this in a couple of rooms but after setting a few up I feel they work better as accent lights. Also given the cost for some rooms it would be incredibly expensive to fully light a room - e.g. I'd need at least 6 in my kitchen.

Thanks for the confirmation on those points.
For ceiling lighting I was thinking possibly using them in a couple of smaller rooms, or even loft, where light switch is not easily reachable.

I decided the bar fitting I originally planned to put them in was not the best idea so just fitted some standard LED bulbs for now.

It looks like a good idea, until as commented above, you start adding the cost!
