Hi

This seams to be good value at £649 if bought online or £699 in store.

Has anyone got one, used one or thinking of buying one and what is your opinion/experience with this laptop, good or bad.

If/when it comes down to £599 or less online I don't think I will be able to resist any longer. Please stop me!

Thanks for you help.

i work for the store where there sold and they have a HUGE problem with there screen lights going, and looking at the screen in low light it flickers ever so slightly... nice machine but this problem has been apparant with the x52, x53 and now the x56 which are all based on the same chassis and screen...

Many thanks for the info LanceCrossfire.

Would this be covered by the guarantee?

Or are you saying best to avoid this model until this problem is fixed?

Can you recommend a laptop with a similar spec/price up to 14'' screen.

Thanks

Are you around LanceCrossfire?

Are you around LanceCrossfire (or anyone else who can advise me)?

I would appreciate your help (see previous post).

Thanks

I also work , much like Lance in the proposed purple goon stores. Im sure he loves the place aswell...

The backlight would be covered under the guarantee yes as its a manufacturers fault. Generally though we are quite bias to Philips machines in general in our store. The x52's we had for instance, None of the mouse touchpads work etc....

Philips dont come across as a great brand in our store but like you probably spotted. The specs are usually very very good.

If i were you i'd go for one anyway but do look into the support behind the machine.

Cheers sol, :)

Thanks for taking time to reply Solarius.

I am also considering the HP DV2175EA but is it a better all round machine and worth paying the extra @ £999.99?

If Philips (Twinhead?) are not too good, do you recommend I try HP/Compaq or Toshiba and do you think they are generally better built and more reliable than Philips?

I'm looking for value for money rather than too cheap and cheerful and a laptop that is still a pleasure to use months/years later and that I won't regret buying.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Well, The HP is obviously a high spec machine so its quite a lot more, Im not 100% sure it would be a great decision if ** after value for money.

Erm.....,

Yeah, Compaq/HP and Tosh would be good brands to stick with, out of personal preference i like the HP and Compaq's but...

I would possibly choose....TOSHIBA P100- 429 @ 799 however.

Looks good, same spec bar the slightly smaller HDD and ram but the superior graphics and the fact it has the same model processor i would choose that one ,especially being what £200 cheaper than that HP. Pretty sexy being 17" aswell.

It really depends what you are going to use the lappy for, I would probably choose that tho :).

Cheers, Sol

you'll find that dsgi actually source the parts and put machines together for philips(freevents and freeline ranges) so in essence they are made by the same company who make medion, cybermaxx, advent and ei systems. the hp 2175ea is a top laptop, but your paying a huge premium for the brand... even though compaq are owned by hp the machines seem a lot more reasonable for the price, take alook at the 6133 and 6150 laptops(the later comes with the same hp imprint surface as the 2175;) ).

and i do love my comapny:D

As an extension to what LanceCrossfire said, Philips don't even source the laptops. A 3rd party has basically licensed the Philips brand, so they can put the badge on their laptops. Forget the name of that company though.
