I know this isnt strictly on topic, but just wanting some perspective. I recently moved house and have a phone line installed but preuming its been disabled. I can hear a dialtone, but when i try to dial any numbers get the BT voice 'sorry this number is not recognised please try again' , oddly enough i can dial 1471 fine.....

Anyways... asked BT to enable it and they have said 2 FULL business days, is this normal these days for JUST the phone line activation ? the website suggests its a few hours for reactivations.

I would expect the "2 Full days" is the worst case but has to be quoted in case the worst case happens to you.

It's like updating DNS information on a domain these days.
If I make a nameserver change that information should be pretty much replicated around in a few hours, however everywhere will still tell you to allow up to 48hrs to be sure.

yeah thats kind what i thought, but i ordered it yesterday at 1pm , still not live and BT are still saying the 18th... it was even 2 WORKING days. When i quoted the websites 'a few hours' they said, and i quote 'yeah that was the old system, now it takes 2 working days'.

Just be pleased you dont have to pay the £125 initial connection fee. I've just moved into a new house and the previous tennants somehow managed without a phoneline. As the house is only a year or two old its never been properly connected, so we were the ones lumped with the cost. So far the letting agency have refused to pay for it even though it will be of benefit to however has the place after us. It also took just under 3 weeks for BT to finaly get to doing it.

PK!

Aye, ive had that before, i was actually more concerned if BT are just trying it on with me, or if the guy at the other end actually knew his stuff. I guess ill have to wait until tuesday to find out.

Judging by what I have heard of the organisation of the exchanges, it probably takes them 2 days to find the correct switch to press, nobody has ever told them to label stuff properly.
My company just moved office about half a mile away, and we wanted to keep the same number on our ISDN line. The BT engineer managed to put the new premises on the wrong part of the exchange so we lost our number for a week unil the could redo it all.

Took me 3 days to get the new number activated then around 5 days befores sky would even touch me with the BB, in total from speaking to BT in the first instance about a number activation and the BB coming on it was about 3 weeks!!

/rant on
just got of the phone with bt myself. I moved house about 3 months ago and havent had a phone line. I phoned bt as there is a signal to the phone but i could not dial anything line just went dead. When i phoned bt i said that i wanted the line turned on they said no problem and low and behold 2 days later it was all sorted, another 2 days later and a bt engineer phones me and says "oh this line is already connected therefore i dont have to come out and check the lines". All good i thought as that means i will not be getting a bill for £125 for installation.

How wrong i was!! a week later a bill arives from bt wanting £175 for installation and 3 months line rental on option 2 ( i wanted option 1). So on the phone to bt i go again. Apparently becouse there was no line connected at the house for over 6 months i was charged the full connection fee!! even though there the line only had the be switched on! and there was another charge on the bill for £4.99 for "undisclosed services" whatever they are.

I dont see how they can get away with charging somuch for some one to flick a switch or update somthing similar to a DNS!

/rant off

sorry about that but bt realy get me going, and i nolonger have a phone line as i told bt where they could stick the bill for £175 I will leave it a week and get the wife to ring them and see how much they will charge her!
