Phone line install, damage to wall.

Sky sent out a Open Reach Engineer earlier this week and he installed the master socket into a blank plate which was already on the wall. I should have checked when he was here but didn’t look until after he left but there is a hole across the whole width of the socket (at the top), I wouldn’t mind but my house is a new build so would expect the walls to be left as found (after all it already had the blank socket on the wall).

I’ve contacted Sky who are just ignoring the issue, even on Twitter they are just ignoring my tweets and direct messages. Does anyone know where I stand on this? Surely this isn’t acceptable?

It looks like the decorators painted with the faceplates fully screwed down and effectively glued them into place around the edges. If the faceplate won't come off the wall without causing damage what are BT supposed to do?

You might find that the socket will lift up a few mm to where the top of the original faceplate was which will hide most of it. If not 5 minutes with some filler and a small dab of paint and it'll be fine.

If that was my new build I'd be complaining about the decorating (unless that's your handy work). From the brush marks it looks like they used a yard brush.

Running a knife around the edge would have released it from the paint. BUt to be fair I'd just caulk round it now and forget.

Yep that painting is terrible.

Yeah going to fill it in and paint over, just think it’s a bit cheeky he didn’t even mention it and like above it could have gone a few mm up and slightly covered.

Couldn't you just take the faceplate off and filler around it or just filler around it? You won't notice it if you leave it for a day then paint over that.

It hasn't got the filter section attached. If it had it would stick out more and the phone outlet would be to the right rather than central.

If there's no phone plugged in there doesn't need to be any filtering anyway. All that Sky filter is doing is a physical conversion from RJ11 to the BT type plug.

I’ve seen new builds where the decorators have caulked around the accessories and smothered them in paint. They must get blind people to do it. Or ‘apprentices’ who are just called that to be eligible for poverty wages.

Caulk it and you'll be fine. Check your T&C's though as most companies state that installations are done at your own risk so small damages like this are simply classed as being necessary.

It's not his fault, the guy who painted around them is at fault. Simple to fix, just sort it yourself.

Frustrating when a "professional" leaves a job in amateur condition like that.

It would take 2 minutes to squirt some decorators caulk around the crack and smoothing it off.

Don't mean to be dismissive but just fix it yourself.

The hassle of getting them to sort it will take far more time and frustration than a touch of filler and a similar paint colour. If you can't get a match just mask a couple of mm around the box and paint it all, it'll look fine and you'll not notice after a week.

As I've done jobs round our house I've found some genuinely terrifying work done by 'professionals'. Don't get me wrong I'm no tradesman, but that's a very job to sort.

I do understand your annoyance, I regularly deal with the fallout of visits from 'engineers' (there's a laugh) and I've had plasterers, glazers and sparkies back on many an occasion, but for a job like that it's just not worth it.

Good luck either way.

Good on you for fixing it. Contrary to my previous post, there are times where it's impossible to do a perfect job and damage is going to occur. Company policy usually constrains their time and absolves them of responsibility, and they lack the materials onboard to make a decent repair. I'd still own up to it were I in their shoes, but if the person before has made it impossible to make it a clean job without investing considerably more time, their choices are limited.
