Hey guys, I've recently just moved into a new house and it's time to get broadband installed!

It seems the line's been disconnected, so there's various connection charges required by providers.

The previous line was a BT one, if I get a Sky line for example, can they just use the existing physical line in the house? I'm assuming they wont need to physically install a new master socket etc in the house?

Thanks!

bt will still connect you anyway iirc. prob best to go with whoever gives you the pest calls and line rental/calls and broadband package. its prob sky tho tbh

providing there is a master socket in the house they may come round mess around setting it up and back to the exchange to set it up.

Ok thanks.

I'm swinging between Sky and Virgin at the moment, both obviously need some sort of installation though. If there's still the physical line, surely there wont be much to do in the house?

sometimes they dont even come round at all and just turn it "on" at the exchange.

out of interest. who is your mobile phone provider? ive got my landline, calls and net with orange for 19/month and i dont find them to shabby at all. might be worth considering if your not fussed about the tv

There are ways to not pay the stupid BT phone line connection charge - it's a scam. Can't remember how to do it though.

If you go with a Sky contract you won't (usually) be charged a connection fee, they'll cover the cost.

Yeah, they want £35 for phone and broadband installation, I think that's regardless of whether you need a phone line connected. Not too bad in fall fairness.

do virgin not use cable? therefore they would install a completely seperate line (that's what they did at my old flat anyway)
i recently signed up for plusnet, they wanted 49 quid for connection, got a cashback deal on quidco for 38 quid!

Hm, good point re cable!

I think Quidco are doing ~£150 cashback on any Virgin media install. Temptings...

Virgin do it all through fibreoptics and if you get their BB aswell they'll connect you for free.

My dad works for BT Openreach who "organise" phonelines, and says that usually if you're going to another company then it's their responsibility to set up your phone line.

But when we tried to go with Sky when we moved into our new house, they told us that we had to get BT to reconnect the line first - when I spoke to BT, they said it was Sky's responsibility - they're not going to connect your line for you to go sod off to someone else.

Went backwards and forwards and eventually sacked off Sky, went with BT.
