Phone Number Not Recognised

Hi Guys,

I've just moved into my new flat for the University year. It's a private landlord's flat in a converted warehouse in York. The guy who lived there previously had a Sky Internet and Phone bundle.

I'm now looking into getting our internet sorted, as his contract is set to end at the end of this month. The phone line is still connected as the internet and calls are still working. I've rang my mobile, and rang 17070 to confirm the number, but when I input this into the Sam Knows checker, or BT's own broadband checker service, it tells me that my telephone number isn't recognised :(

Any ideas chaps?

Thanks.

Its probably now logged as an "out of service" number if the previous tenant has cancelled his account. The dial tone may remain for a while after the cancellation, but will eventually turn into a fully stopped line where incoming and outgoing calls can't be made.

When you 17070 it was it a british woman or an american called Zoe?

It was an American, can't remember her name though :p

It did cross my mind that it'd be out of service, I've rang BT and the woman on the end of the phone said they'd get back to me about offering any broadband or phone services.

What's the significance of the American?

If the previous tenant was paying Sky the line rental too, then this can happen.
When I moved here I was in the same boat, line disconnected but still reported the number via 17070. Every checker I tried said invalid number, and when I check the property particulars I noticed that both the broadband and line rental were paid to Post Office.

Got the service moved back over to BT - got new number and then it popped up on all the checkers.

its Skys' Zoe then. It should start "Hi my name is Zoe and I'm here to ensure your phone service is the very best, please feel free to call any time" (I hear it 10+ times a day, it drives me nuts lol)

The significance is that this is Skys LLU product, specific only to sky, they have their own numbers allocated (i.e. BT/Talk Talk etc can't use them unless they are ported across when switching phone providers)

When you enter this number in BT checker and any other service that requires a BT phone line to operate, it will throw it up as the number is not recognised (as it isn't a BT phone number, its Sky specific) until you take that number over to the BT network

Ahh, I wasn't aware that Sky numbers somehow differed from other numbers. Which does explain why I couldn't find it on a checker :D

I had a phone call back from BT yesterday saying that they're confident they can offer me their Infinity package, so they've arranged for an engineer to come out. Even sweetended the deal and gave me nine months half price rather than the three on the internet :D

Anyway, thanks for clearing those things up guys. Very helpful.
