Phone number porting complications

So i'm looking to get a new phone and there's a possibility that Orange won't offer me the phone i want on upgrade (the new SPV C600). So i was thinking of signing up for a new contract as it's free for new customers. However, this might complicate things with my number which i want to keep. I know you cant port it from one Orange contract to another, but iirc you can get round this by:

- converting current contract to PAYG
- getting new contract phone from Orange to get the handset for free
- port the number from PAYG back to the new contract

does this work? are there any easier ways?

thanks :)

I think that can be done, not to sure though as I havn't done it myself.

I know you can transfer it to another network and then port back.

Really bad isn't it that they do this

yeah just a hastle really. any easy way i could port to another network and then back or is it easier just to convert current sim to PAYG?

I can't comment on Orange but i know t-mobile wont convert a contract number to a PAG - so you'd be wise to check if they will do it. The other option which we did recently was to port from t-mobile to virgin then back to t-mobile, took 2 weeks in total, 1 to port to virgin then another 1 to port back to t-mobile.

If you need a virgin sim i have one you can have

I've done Orange -> Orange PAYG -> Orange again before. The phone was in my mum's name before, then my name for PAYG. Don't think that made a difference though.

Be warned that Orange PAYG T&C's say minimum term is 3 months. I fully expected to have to do this, but got itchy feet and rang after a couple of weeks on PAYG. They handed me the PAC code there and then... so maybe they don't stick to it, but it might be worth noting!

Firstly, T-Mobile will convert a contract SIM to a PAYG, because I did it a year ago. I then ported this number to an Orange PAYG SIM, and took an Orange contract in September, where I got my number ported across again.

That may be true, but you do know that Networks can easily change their policies don't you :p

thanks for that, something to note certainly. It's a pain having to do it, but if i want to stay with orange, it may be my best option.....i'll speak to them and see what i can do re a free phone :)

Just to clear something up, you don't use a PAC code to port from Orange PAYG to Orange contract, you use a different number transfer process that can only be done at point of sale for the new contract.

There is a three month period where you after transfer from contract to PAYG where you can't transfer back as well.

I thought this was the case. I was quite surprised I got away with it - although when I did it (2-3 years ago), you did need a PAC code to go Orange PAYG->Orange Contract. They changed it shortly afterwards.

that's a complete pain ! how much did they want for the upgrade price btw ?

and on same tariff a take it, what if you increase your tariff for a few months ?

Firstly, a year ago they may well have done, but as at 3 weeks ago when we enquired they said the can't/wont migrate a contract number to a PAG sim - they will however migrate a PAG number to a contract sim
