I'm sure most will have either come across this themselves or heard about it.

You basically get some boy from mumbai phones you up, tells you that your computer told them it needing fixed, they get you to give them control of the computer then they start showing you things, calling them all viruses, and how your c: is too full, your comps too slow etc. Then they ask you to buy their antivirus.....

Thats the gist and obviously they get told where to go when they phone me, but recently the mother in law bought a laptop and despite me warning her about this very thing she fell for it good and proper and only stopped at the point where they wanted her card details.

Now the problem is that she is so naive with computers, she cant even tell me exactly what she done or they done other than the fact they got her to install 'something'

So should i do the safe thing and just reformat the computer just to be sure? She only got it 4 weeks ago and considering she doesnt know how to create a folder in explorer, theres nothing on it really, its hardly been touched, so a reformat isnt the end of the world.

Because these guys never get past the first sentence with me ive never had to look into exactly what happens after that point like if they have installed some kind of spyware or the likes.

Any advice is appreciated.

They seem pretty damn efficient at getting on your computer considering she doesn't know how to create a folder. How do they get their software on the machine? Do they ask you to go to a website and download it?

Yes they talked her through it and told her exactly what to do so she kinda didnt need to know what she was doing, just follow instructions. Then it would seem that she downloaded something they directed her to and then from that took over contol of the computer.

had this same phone call yesterday. Telling me to look in event viewer/windows logs/system and see how many red/yellow errors there are.
They wanted to take control of my computer and help me out using this http://www.ammyy.com/en/. Right
I said I don't know who you are and you want me to give you access to my computer. He said look at this website http://www.gizmotonic.com/ Thats who I work for.
Sorry fella you are just trying to sell me something so bugger off.

I saw a video on youtube the other day of this guy talking to those scammers. He had them connect to his machine and spout all their lies etc. He then dropped the bombshell at the end by saying something along the lines of "You actually connected to a virtual machine in vmware that I set up just to screw with you". They instantly hung up on him.
