Hi,

We're currently in the process of doing the hall, stairs and landing and there' a few things I could do with some advice on. This is with the intention of selling within a year and moving to a 4 bed.

The first, we're laying laminate on floorboards, the problem is the boards are going the same way we want the laminate to go, long ways down the hall and not across it. I know the rule of thumb is to go opposite the floorboards but is it ok if the boards are sound? Also, any recommendations on underlay? I was looking at Carpetright but just looking at their prices made my starfish sore especially when compared to Screwfix.

Next question, the phone socket coming in has been damaged by the previous owner. Is it a DIY replacement job or will I need a specialist in for it? Would it be easier to move it out of the hall from a place with no nearby plug sockets for a phone and into the lounge? no idea what I'm even looking for.

The thermostat is old and looks manky, again, something I could replace or is this going to be a case of getting someone in who knows what they are doing? Nothing smart, just a nice replacement.

The mould I'm aware of. it's a corner that's been stuck behind a curtain, stuck behind a cupboard that's had no air until now. It'll be bleached, scrubbed and aired properly.

Your not supposed to mess with the master socket.

Depends how good you are with this sort of thing. There are guides and advice from BT/openreach people on the web, If your doing a straight like for like replacement and you get the right tools, its highly unlikely to go wrong as long as you take plenty of photos, write down which wire to which "slot" number etc

IF your floorboards are sounds I wouldnt worry about going the same direction. If they aren't then you may break the tongue and groove thats typically why you go the other direction

Thermostats tend to be 2 wires, but you would need to isolate the heating controls. And use one of the same make.

I've asked for a local professional regarding the master socket, I value my internet access too much :D

I could do it but not as quickly as a pro.

Regarding the thermostat, i'm considering a hive active heating thermostat for combi boilers (despite saying I didn't want smart) as it'll give us more flexibility over the heating, just no idea if it'll work with our Worcester combi, it's at least 12 years old now.

The only people who should mess with master sockets are BT themselves. Your 'local professional' is no more allowed to mess with it than you are.

That said changing a master socket only involves connecting two wires and is trivially easy.

There's no reason a smart thermostat wouldn't work with your boiler if it already has a room stat. It's the wiring (or lack off) you need to worry about.

Buy a new master socket, plenty of wiring diagram online.

Master will have a two pair coming in. Only one pair will be used. Take a picture.

The rest is for your other plug sockets, you'll need a push in tool. Screwfix sell these.

Bt will quote a stupid amount as they don't want the work.
