Phones with HSDPA - does using as a modem cost?

If I have an unlimited data package with my phone (HSDPA capability) - If I were to connect it to my laptop to use as a modem, will this be charged extra??

It's is not technically in the terms for most contracts, in fact it is mainly prohibited. I'm not sure how well it is enforced though.
 
I'm just coming to the end of my contract with T-Mobile, and have had a Viewty with their web n walk package - unlimited browsing basically. I've never hit the 'fair use' policy and constantly run my laptop through it whilst away from home with no problems at all - over a year now (originally on a U900).

The only downside I have noticed is that it automatically downloads low res images in every page - they can be manually replaced with the proper ones (hover over then shift + R) but this is probably something I missed in the settings.

Torrents won't work, but Skype and Live Messenger do.

Sppeds are good enough to get by on, but doni't even think about playing an FPS online through one!
 
I know with T-Mobile that if you have the WnW + or Max then you can use it as a modem (the 3GB and over packages) but the standard WnW with 1GB they dont allow for this to be used as a modem, may have changed since i asked about this though (about a year ago) I think all other Mobile operators do not like you to use the phone as a modem and may get very peeved about it :)
 
But unless you seriously abuse the limits, how will they know?

I used my T-Mobile for a few weeks while I was waiting for BT to fit the phone line and no-one complained...
