Looking for a 2 bay nas to store and backup our photos:

Needs to be easy to use (wife)
Provide good organisation of photos easy to create albums
Sync photos from iphones to it
Built in card reader?
Natively support cannon raw formats?

What are your recommendations.

1. You set it up and it appears as shares on your LAN.
2. Not a NAS function; it's up to you what you do with the shares.
3. IMO this isn't a NAS function.
4. No chance. Not really a NAS function. If you insisted, you could attach one via USB but it's really much easier to go via a PC.
5. Don't understand this. Just what do you expect it to do with the files?

Is the NAS going to be the primary storage or backup for your photos? It can't be both.
Having said all that, there's a very good deal on the Asustor AS-302T on the rainforest at the moment. After that, the Synology DS216Play is worth a look.

as above

1. you can have admin/access functions in the NAS but ultimately it appears as a share on the network which can be mapped to a drive.
2. Have a look at adobe lightroom, not only it will provide you with the tools to edit your pictures, it has filing/catalogue features too.
3. up to you how you manage the copy process from your phone to the storage
4. as above, you would probably copy your files from the reader on your pc to the NAS share
5. the NAS will just store files, it doesn't care what they are, the display / handing of your RAW files is up to the machine that is being used to display them

absolutely agree with the storage vs. backup option. In fact I would argue that an on-site NAS will never be a backup - might be a redundant copy of your files with disk resilience, but if your house is broken into / NAS stolen or it goes up in a fire - it's not a backup. For backups for example I move my files from the NAS to the Amazon cloud (offsite backup 1) and from the NAS to an external HDD which I also keep offsite (offsite backup 2).
