I've just got back from 6 weeks of travelling and have lots of photos I want to archive and edit.
I believe one of the most popular packages is Lightroom. To get the latest version do I have to buy a creative cloud account and subscribe to it? Or can I just buy it outright?
Does LR have the ability to archive my photos? Similar to what iPhoto does on my mac?

I really dislike iPhoto - slow and poorly designed, so I want to avoid using it..

Other options are appreciated!

Many Thanks

£8.99 monthly for lightroom and PS seems like a good deal to me.

Ooh it's only £7.49 at the mo.

You can buy the standalone version of Lightroom 5 for around £100. If a Lightroom 6 comes out you would need to pay an upgrade price of around 50-60 pounds, or stay on Lightroom 5.

If you sign up to the Cloud you get Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC plus any upgrades that come out for the price of the monthly subscription. All depends really on how much use your gonna get out of it, but the Cloud is a crazy good offer at the moment.

You can buy it outright, you can also download it and get a free 30 day trial

I have it on a monthly student deal - just PS and LR, suits me as I wouldn't want to fork out for PS and it is useful to have

Me?
I have three versions of the Xara and Photographic Designer series and Paintshop Pros 5/6
and you can transfer files from one to another and do some amazing artwork with the photography effects, all for less than a hundred quid apiece. But if you're a beginner and just want to edit photos, Paintshop Pro're good for beginners.

I pay for Lightroom and Photoshop monthly and it's ideal for what I want and I don't have to worry about upgrade costs.

Love the way the whole thread got derailed onto pricing.

Light room will do everything you want. It will catalog, apply filters, adjustments and even do some pretty advanced spot removal if you need. It's great.

Don't forget if you or an immediate member of your family are in education you can get a big fat educational discount.

I'm also in the Photoshop/Lightroom CC camp.

However, I only fairly recently switched from Aperture after Apple finally announced that they were no longer going to support it.
