Afternoon all.

My first time posting in the photo boards so go easy on me :) Am looking for some feedback on some of my pics. Here's a few landscape ones, but have taken all sorts in the last year...

The first isn't bad considering you are shooting into the sun. Its generally a bad idea as the shot doesn't always work. The 2nd shot is a bit meh. You've got this great backdrop and yet you focus on some random twigs :) The shot doesn't really work either way. The twigs are place on the side of the frame and it just feels wrong. The 3rd shot is much nicer. The clouds on the 4th shot are blown out, however the composition is good.

I agree with this post :)

Ta for the feedback folks. I have this thing about shooting into the sun at the moment, don't know why but I like it, though you're right it is difficult to get good results.
How do you mean about the clouds being blown out cyKey in the last one?

Ah see.
Any top tips for shooting better clouds fella?

Its something you could fix in processing. You could process the photo so the sky is perfect and use the dodge tool (14%, highlights) in photoshop to bring out the ground.

Not bad - number 3 is my favourite as to me it's the most interesting out of the lot. As for getting better clouds - coloured filters are a good idea - like perhaps a warm up, neutral gradient or a blue grad filter :)

Yeah - I need to get to grips more with photoshop. I know most of the basic stuff but not the ins and outs. My background is more in web graphics (I know Fireworks better) and photography is something I'm leaning strongly towards.

Just had a quick scan at your website fella - good stuff indeed!

Looks like it's just me, but I quite like no. 2. I think the simplicity appeals. Just goes to show - each to their own, I guess.

They are all pleasing to the eye, but none make me sit up or evoke emotion about wanting to be in the scene. Still, nice photo's for sure though! :)

Cheers folks. Each to their own is a good addage to remember with anything that's creative, a bit arty or whatever. It's really useful to post pics on here and get feedback though, much appreciated. Might post some more in a bit...

On a side note - when taking landscape shots are there any tricks to really draw you in and make you want to be there as TomWilko says???

Ok here's a few more from a recentish Scotland trip. I kind of know about the rule of thirds, phi, 1.618 and all that. I think there's more to it than that though for making an interesting landscape shot. What it is though I don't know exactly :)

What you guys reckon to these?....

i love the first one, you've got the picture composed really well and it isnt always easy to shoot into the sun, tbh, the second one looks a bit wierd, as was said before, you've got a great backdrop but you focused one some random twigs.... the third one is a bit too bright on the rocks, the shadows on the fourth one are a bit too harsh, i would have used a flash on that one to illuminate the rocks a bit. But overall great pics :) all of the ones on a sunny day look good.

regards, david.
