Photo organisation

So, I've finally managed to get all my photos into one location but I have a problem. There's way too many to just sit and organise... Is there any decent software to help automate this? It can be free or paid, no budget.

edit: Is there any AI software that exists that would be able to grab meta data and group events based on people and time/date?

I want to bump this thread, because I've been in need of such a program for a long time. I hope it decides on its own how to organize everything.

There is a little known (free) product called Damselfly which can look after all the indexeing based on various criteria.

No, I've not used it as my workflow is structured differently as I already keep all my photos in folders named by date/event with a separate catalogue for each. Hence I can very quickly locate any photo I need. Where something like this would come in handy is when I'm asked for photos of a particular race driver or car, and I have to trawl through events individually which can be time consuming
