I've just been trying out the free demo of Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery to try and recover some photos I deleted last night. I noticed it was taking hours and finding gigabyte after gigabyte of jpegs, png, bmp, avi, mpg, etc. When I selected JPEG, it listed hundreds of pictures and clicking on them reveals the picture. But actually, it's just finding EVERY SINGLE THING on my computer that I DIDN'T delete, lol. What is the point of that? I want it to find what I HAVE deleted. Any good photo recovery software you can recommend?

It's rubbish software, the Stellar guys had a spam bot on here advertising it not so long ago, says it all :p

PhotoRec is top of the game :)

Thanks tntcoder. Someone on another forurm said stellar was.. well, a stellar bit of software, :p but obviously it's crap. I'll try out photorec.
 
another vote for recuva.

Used it on a mates crashed HDD the other night and it erm... recovered a bit more than he was expecting. hahaha "What has been seen cannot be unseen etc etc"
 
PhotoRec. I use nothing else. Gets stuff of corrupted drives also, slowly..but it will do it. Will even partially recover the non corrupted parts of image files.

It's partner in crime testdisk is also very good for all your other recovery needs.
 
I'll try Recuva too, thanks. I tried photorec last night, seems quite good. It operates within a dos type window and said it would take 30 hours to complete the operation :eek: Anyway, I did it for a few minutes and it made a whole bunch of folders with files in it. Again, I'm seeing some pictures 'recovered' that I didn't delete, I don't get that.
 
It will recover ANY JPEG ever on the area that you are scanning unless otherwise over-written by new data.

And yes, this is an hours operation, not a minutes one :p

Ah I see. It gave me the choice of scanning the whole hard drive or just unused space, and I chose to scan the whole disc. That accounts for the extra long time to complete the operation.

Hmm, if it gives me the choice to scan the whole drive, that suggests it can recover photos and files 'underneath' overwritten data, but as you say, it could only recover jpegs not overwritten. Which begs the question then, what is the benefit of it being able to scan the complete disc if it can only recover from unused space?
 
i tried using recuva but it never found the photos i wanted, these havnt been deleted just an hdd with an os that wont boot, i used a different program, it found them all but tried to charge me, any ideas.

If there is nothing physically wrong with the hard drive or the file system and it is just an OS that wont boot then you should be able to simply slave the hard drive using an external enclosure or USB adaptor and browse the contents of the disc to copy the required files. No need for photo recovery software. :cool:
 
could also download hirens boot cd and boot mini windows xp from the cd and search the hard drive if using a laptop :) This is how I do it.
