Photo Transfer Problem

There's probably a simple fix for this but I've been scratching my head all afternoon. I had a folder full of photos on my PC which I transferred to my iPad as I needed to reformat my HDD and wanted to keep a copy of the photos somewhere. Now I've reinstalled Windows and want to transfer the folder from the iPad back onto the PC, the problem is iTunes doesn't see any of the photos and also going to Computer > Portable Devices > My iPad shows a DCIM folder but none of the photos I transferred are inside it. I've also tried plugging my iPad in via USB, waiting for the Windows dialogue box to ask if I want to import photos, I select yes but it only seems to import photos from my Photo Stream.

I know the photos still exist because I can view them on the iPad itself, I just can't seem to find a way to get them off the iPad and back onto the PC. There are 700+ photos and they're taking up a fair chunk of storage on my iPad which is incredibly annoying! Any ideas? I've tried using iCloud but I can't make any sense of the thing, it only seems to backup Photo Stream stuff which is useless to me!

Thanks in advance.
