Photocard expired - Can I drive while the application is in for a new one?

My photocard expired at the end of July and due to the useless online application thing (doesn't recognise my counterpart number...) I haven't got my new card yet. I understand there is up to a £1000 fine but if I have the application in and waiting for the new card can I still drive?

Long shot but I don't drive much and want to hire a car for a few days at the end of this week...:rolleyes:

You won't get far renting a car without a photocard to produce.

I have the photocard and would be ringing up any rental agency beforehand to check. My main thought was whether I'd be fined (up to) £1000 if stopped by the police for some reason, and whether it was even worth trying to blag it with the rental agency... :)

You don't need to AFAIK :confused:

Ah, ok, when doing it online you don't have to send it off, I assumed it was the same with the form they send as it's taken from your passport details (online at least).

(although I will be ringing up the DVLA and seeing if they can sort their system out... so I can do it online).
 
I'm sure in the past the hire company has been able to call the DVLA and confirm I have a licence, they charged me for the call, a couple of quid if I remember correctly and the DVLa asked to speak to me to confirm identity before they handed over any info.

This was a few years ago.

It's possible if you we're to say that your existing license was:
Lost
Stolen
Damaged
Destroyed

Although OP's license has expired so this option isn't available. I'm actually confused as to why they don't just say destroy your existing license when your new one arrives rather than request it be returned. Especially as if you apply online you don't need to return your existing license.
 
Just send it in by post, I got mine back in just over a week, Must have got the DVLA in a good week tho :)
 
I drove around for about 6months with an expired photocard without realising so you should be fine.

Dunno about renting a car though. I needed a van which is what made me change mine. I kept my old card though just for keep-sakes, just said I'd lost it.
 
I renewed mine through the post office service and they gave me a receipt type thing which I could use to show Police if I was stopped etc. not sure if that would be sufficient for hire cars though - I guess the police can enter the driver number and get all the details.
 
Hire car company will call the DVLA and check your licence details. Take some other form of valid photo ID with you.

Even better, ask the car hire company - not OcUK.
 
I know for certain that Enterprise rent a car will just call the dvla if you dont have your full licence with you, you will still need id to rent though.
