Hi all.

I'm looking for some advice on a new desktop pc. The choice is vast and a bit confusing. " For me"

I use the pc for general internet/email. Light use of Open office/excel. I enjoy photography so the pc would need to run Photoshop cc.

I am pretty confused over the processors e.g. i5 i7 i9. My current pc is an i7-3770 @3.40GHz

64 bit System

16gb ram

2tb sata drive

Windows 8

12 years old.

This as been a great pc and run Photoshop cs6 for ever. It is still quick on start up and great but It's time I started to use Photoshop cc plus the newer cameras require software not able to run on this system.

As you can tell I don't change my tech often so I would like to buy something that will last a while.

I am thinking to spend upto £1500.

My thoughts, off my limited knowledge are the pc would need.

Highest processor eg : Intel i9

64 Ram

1 tb ssd

4 tb sata drive

No idea as regards graphics apart from reading about Gpu ?

As you can see my knowledge is limited but I would really appreciate anyone wishing to point to a pc on the site that they think would fit, from my description.

Feel free to tell me i'm completely wrong with the above.
All advice is welcomed.

Thanks

Hi and welcome.

Wil you be building or pre built system?

Coming from 3770 anything modern will seem like a giant step up.
Hi there thanks for your reply. I am wanting pre built.

I'm in the same position re Photoshop CS6 / old Lightroom BUT i just convert my RAW images to dng files using the free Adobe converter - does not loose any quality.

Hi there.

Yes I have done that in the past.

I would normally use Canon Dpp4 for my Canon R6 files. Its slow but I like the simple layout. I would then transfer over to Cs6.
A few weeks back Windows got messed up somehow and the only solution was to refresh the pc.

Which solved the problem but reverted it back to Win 8 I was on Win 8.1.

Thus Canon dpp4 would not open my raws. Secondly my Cs6 was a dodgey copy which I threw out some time ago. I know I could most likley upgrade to 8.1 and maybe find a way to get on windows 10 but I have come to the conclusion I have had my monies worth and need to upgradE.

For 2D work / photoshop you don't normally need that many cores, it is mainly single core/thread, so personally I wouldn't bother with an i9 and the added complications in motherboard and cooling requirements.

They're starting to introduce more GPU-oriented features, even for 2D work, so while the IGP used to be fine, I'd suggest getting a 3060 12GB at this point.

Swap the CPU for i5-13500 (not available at OCUK).

Cooler: this (under £50).

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,343.89 (includes delivery: £0.00)
Hi There

Really appreciate you putting this togther. Explaining the Intel core processor helps too.
I maybe stating the obvious but the above basket is for me to build ?
Plus purchase win 11.
If so is there pre built pc you would reccomend.

Thanks
