photos folder backup

Hi

Would like to back up my photos folder to either an SD card or USB stick and wondering if I need to format said storage option to the Mac file system?

If I do would I still be able to view them on non mac platforms.

Ok I think I understand that providing my external storage is Fat32 I can copy/move files on both mac/windows fine?
