Photos from a complete noob

Right, I'd just like to say that although I love looking at decent photos, I've never really been any good myself.

Anyway, one of my housemates has a Olympus E-500 DSLR and I thought I'd have a go to take photos of the SURT (Southampton Uni Race Team) testing.

Here's the results:



And I also tried some action shots with some friend playing Basketball. It was hard to compose a decent shot with people playing a competitive game, but here's one of the better ones:



Both images have been cropped and bordered.

What do you think? Keep it simple, like I said I'm a complete noob.

1st's rather dull to be honest, unless it's a subject you find interesting i don't think anybody not involved in that scene would like it much.

2nd one's better, would have been better if you could have seen the faces clearly, as it is they are both obscured by an arm but as you said it's hard to get a "posed" shot in a fast moving action shot. Beyond that, the angles fairly good, image is clean but i would have preferred to be able to see the faces.
