Photoshop acting seriously retarded

As above, I was continuing a vector I started 6 months ago with the pen tool and I was doing a layer and after some time, it just rejects carrying on with the tool, it starts a new layer!?!



Is there any way I can get it to continue, or copy the pen selection?

Im guessing there is a limit to the amount of pen points. Is there any way you can break that section up into several layers?

This isn't a limit as far as I know, I'v way more pen points than that!
