Hi all,

I have a flat texture, think of a rectangle shape, that I want to apply to the ring of a 'donut'. What would be the best way of doing this?

I've played with have a donut shape, then flattening it out using the Polar coordinates filter, but when you revert the changes it appears to warp the shape a bit?

Any thoughts?

Do you have access to Illustrator? The 3D tools there are much better suited to your task.

Failing that, are you familiar with Blender? It's super fast to draw a torus and map a texture to it.

Not personally but believe I can get it

Blender I used ages ago, but that's a 3d app?

It's basically a texture I wish to apply to a 2d image that would be used in a game

Ah, so the in-game object is a torus right? And you're trying to apply your texture to that object but you don't have the UV map?

Actually yes, it's a torus shape just 2d.

So basically I'm currently applying a polar coordinates filter to make the torus into a rectangle, effectively unfolding it, but it's crewing up the size and shape a bit when you put it back to a torus shape.....I've currently bodged it by changing the scale manually but as you say, an actual UV map would be better!

I'll do some digging to see if there is a way to do this in photoshop, otherwise I'll need to get a copy of illustrator, particularly if things start going well

Right, Illustrator probably won't help. Scrap that idea.

But you really need to get a hold of the UV map, or the person that's done the UV unwrapping for the torus you're trying to apply the texture to. If they've done a good job then you may be able to figure the unwrap, but if they've done it badly then who knows how the texture might map. I'm assuming the in-game object doesn't have a texture currently, otherwise it would be super easy to use that as the map and work over it.

Ah, see it's nothing anyone has created..... It's just a shape I'm trying to apply a texture to.

I guess I could use 3dsmax to make a torus and uv map it myself and try from there... Didn't think this would be quite so difficult :p
