Hey guys,
Trying to submit and application to a CV to a graphics design company and would like to know the cause of this weird bug.

As you can see it isn't very good (happens when I drag anything around).

I have photoshop etc on my second hard drive and use my OS on my primary, I've set the scratch disks to be on the same hard drive as photoshop.

So, anybody seen this before and knows a solution? (Cookies for the winner)

Probably running a little short on RAM.
If not, I'd try updating the graphics drivers as the next port of call.

I've got 8gigs, so that's not the problem, updated drivers too and the problem still happens.

Dunno off the top of my head then, but 8 gigs can easily be eaten with a few PS windows open, crud in the background and so-on :)

Are you sure the system & any overclocks are stable? I'd give memtest/ prime an overnight run, and remember that you may well need to up the volts on the memory slightly if you're running 4 sticks.
Also make sure you're fully patched up on Windows & PS. Some dodgy copies may also give you odd problems, but you'll get no support for those here ;)

Agree with the poster above though- We need more details on the system, and whether these actually appear on the exports, or whether they're simply graphics artifacts.
From what I can see at the mo, they look like simple window drawing errors, but I'm rather short on details.

Hey, the exports are fine. I've turned my memory down from 1600 to 1333 and the problem is still happening (haven't tried memtest yet, but will). When magnified the problem still happens, but when I hide and show the layer the problem fixes (until the object gets moved).

Specs:

2500k @ 4.5 (3.2GHZ)
8GB RAM
6950(70)
P67A-GD65
Agility 3 (Boot)
Caviar black (PS location)

i have a very similar problem (cs4).

create a layer and strange blocks appear.. sometimes if you scroll around the document to certain areas they will disappear, but zooming doesnt seem to help. its very random and i have no clue why it happens and havent bothered to fix it yet but it is very annoying

i7 950 + 6gb ddr3 + xfx 5850 + win7

It's a drawing issue from your graphics card. ATi drivers just arnt up to the same standard as Nvidia, especially when it comes to CAD and design software. If you've got the latest drivers there isnt much you can do other than switch to Nvidia or scour the internet for a fix.

it has worked fine before using the same graphics card and numerous other ATI cards. In fact I have never had an nVidia card since the mx440.

could actually be the latest drivers causing the issue as opposed to older ones but cant be bothered to test that.

Language young'un. I'm merely pointing out the highest probability cause of Oliver's problem. I didn't see yours, without screen shots it is harder to tell but but if you are just creating a layer it should never create additional artefacts.

Oliver is dragging his around so it is redrawing the object and not clearing up where it was previously. I've seen it a lot and the common denominator is an ATi card or corrupted graphics drivers.

apologies, for me, a random artifact will appear when creating a new layer, in particular drawing a box or something and then gets worse when it's dragged around and mostly appears at the bottom of the screen.

It does seem like the exact same problem after playing around a bit

changing settings in catalyst seems to have no affect whatsoever.

I just tried savign the PSD I was playing with and re-opening it from the 64-bit version of photoshop and it seems much better.

So would this mean that it's possible that older drivers could fix the problem and that it's a bug with the current drivers?

Possibly, can't say for sure as you just don't know how the drivers have changed through development. If you do revert back though remember to fully clean your drivers and install the old ones like new.
