RULES
-----

Rules must be followed. Failure to follow one or more rules will result in disqualification for the current round.

* One image per entrant (may be a montage).
* If a montage is entered, all aspects in the image will be judged on their relevance to each other as well as the theme.
* Images must be posted in or linked to this thread for consideration.
* Images must be a maximum of 800 * 600 (a larger sized image may be linked to).
* Images may have an optional border. If used, this must be a single colour and a reasonable size.
* Images that have been commented on previously by any of the judges, will not be considered.
* Images must be available for viewing in this thread until the competition winner has been announced.
* Images must be your own work unless posting on behalf of someone else. If this is the case it should be stated in your post.

* Only Photoshop or GIMP may be used - no raster editors etc.
* Photoshoppers retain full copyright to their entries, so you must contact them before using their entries.

* The winner of each round will choose the theme for the next round and should participate as a judge. If the winner is not available to judge the next round he or she can nominate a judge.
*As a guest judge, the winner of the last round cannot produce an entry for this round.

* The Judges may not discuss or submit their interpretation of the theme until the competition winner has been announced.
* The Judges will not reveal individual scores, however some judges may provide a critique after the competition has ended.
* The Judges may or may not notify disqualified photoshoppers before the deadline.
* The Judges decisions are final.

RECOMMENDATIONS
---------------

Recommendations are optional.

A '+' sign next to the recommendation means you will gain marks.

A '/' sign next to the recommentation means your score will not be affected.

Each of the 3 judges will give you a score out of 30 as follows:-

* Technical ( 1 - 10 )

+ Multiple Photoshop techniques used in conjunction well
+ Consistant Lighting/Saturation/Contrast throughout the work.
+ Good use of own and stock artwork.
+ Appreciation for Rule of Thirds, Golden Mean and other photographic rules.

- Overuse of stock artwork
- Inconsistant Lighting/Saturation/Contrast.
- Visible lack of effort.
- Cliched techniques.

* Theme Relevance ( 1 - 10 )

+ Good interpretation of the theme
+ Originality

/ Your image should represent the theme without further commentary.

+ Overall ambience of the image.

Hopefully Phate will turn up soon to announce a winner so this plan can be put into action.

Well that might need some discussion. Slight contradiction there ;). Why not other raster apps like PSP and Corel Painter or vector-based tools such as Illustrator and Inkscape?

Why not make it a 'Graphics Competition', rather than specifically Photoshop? Users may use whatever tools are at their disposal to interpret the theme, be it an amusing photochop, a slick vector illustration, a digital painting, a photoshop composition, a 3D abstract...

woops meant vector not raster!

I figured this is a photoshop comp, but allow gimp for all the linux people. If people want to say graphics generally then that's fine with me - though IMHO, I'd say no 3d graphics because I see that as an entirely different ball game.

fini

Yeah, I recon make it a graphics challenge, and I agree that 3D is too different.

Also;
* Images must be a maximum of 800 * 600 (a larger sized image may be linked to).
* Images may have an optional border. If used, this must be a single colour and a reasonable size.

I think just keep it one size, and not even link to a larger size, as it keeps it more uniform, easier to judge and makes it fairer on people with low spec machines IMO.

Also, I think scrap the border rule. Why shouldn't more creative borders be used as long ss they have been made from scratch?

I thought it would be OK to link to a larger image because you might've done lots of detailed work that gets lost at 800 * 600 (eg in my pic, in the middle pic the zombie was holding an ice cream, but it's barely noticeable).

Thinking about it, I agree with you.

The image ( min and max ) size should be 800*600.

I appreciate what you say , but then the challenge is to make it work within a set canvas size.

This works the other way aswell , you could create a stunning piece of an image and just submit that if a minimum canvas size is not set either.

I think this makes sense. :) ?

Cheers,

Mark

Come on guys, lets get this thing running. Does anyone else having anything to say about the rules fini posted? I recon it should be a general graphics challenge rather than just a purely Photoshop one. I also think there should be a set resolution for entries. How about 1024x768 so we can have a bit more detail in there without going stupid.

That resolution would mean horizontal scroll bars for most people - so they'd have to be scrolling backwards and forwards to see whos entry it is.

I'm a bit worried about having Phate and Chaos as judges - as they've seem to have disappeared - so maybe we need new/different judges?

They only need to be here to start the competitions and when they are finished so they can judge them. If everybody is happy with the proposed rules then just ask Phate to set the challenge.

yeh, but Phate didn't start the competition on time and has yet to judge it - and he was supposed to how long ago now??? Chaos hasn't been seen since saying he wanted to judge AFAIK.

fini

He said in the original thread when it started, he just didn't set the submission thread up straight away. How would you be able to post you entry as soon as the comp starts anyway?

Chaos has been around since he said he wanted to be a judge.

Just ask Phate to set up a submission thread with the competition theme, start and finish dates and also the comp rules at the top. Then whoever wants to enter can.

800*600 fixed size.

Either Photoshop/Gimp only OR All Graphics including 3D.

Fini to organise and judge the next one , as he seems to be putting some effort into the comp.

Cheers,

Mark

Ive changed a few little details on the rules. Anyone disagree with anything there, or have anything to add? I recon if we can get a chellenge set today it would be good, as it would be nice to have the challenge running Sunday-Sunday. I suppose we don't have to have every detail sorted now. As long as we have a rough framework, we can tweak the rules after each challenge.

Rules seem fine for now ( as you say,can be tweaked if needed).

Clarify the maximum 800*600 part , Does maximum 800*600 mean you can enter a smaller size ?

OK , drop the 3D part.

In the absence of Phate/Chaos we will still need a judge/judges if we are to start today.

Cheers,

Mark

Anyone have any objections to me and fini being judges for this weeks challenge?
I'm fine with being a judge for this week, but I'm not sure that I'd want to be a permanent judge - I want to be able to participate in the comp.

I agree that the rules should be changed to state that the entry must be 800 * 600 rather than a maximum.

I also think we should change:

* The winner of each round will choose the theme for the next round and should participate as a judge. If the winner is not available to judge the next round he or she can nominate a judge.
*As a guest judge, the winner of the last round cannot produce an entry for this round.

to:
* The winner of each round will choose the theme for the next round and should participate as a judge. If the winner is not available to judge the next round he or she can nominate a judge.
*The theme chosen should not be one used previously in this season
*The theme can stipulate a stock image and/or slogan to be used, but does not have to
*As a guest judge, the winner of the last round cannot produce an entry for this round.

Also, there should be a line somewhere stating that a season is 10(just a number of the top of my head) rounds long.

I'm fine to come up with a theme if nobody else wants to.

That ok for the final rules? Ive also added a bit about season rules. Ive made a sesason 9 challenges, as it makes it less likely for a tie break situation. Go ahead with a theme for this week fini if you fancy. I might still put an entry in, but obviously it won't be judged.
