Got myself a SLR just after xmas and now I've got photoshop although I haven't got any experience with it. What is the best way to learn, online tutorials or go and buy a book. I like the sound of the book idea but there are lots, so any recommendations for a book would be very helpful.

Thank you in advance.

for starting with editing i think u might want to try another adobe program called lightroom go over to the adobe site grab your self a 30day test and see what you think

i love it as its basically a photo organizer with lots of editing tool and 100% none destructive in its edit

it integrates with photoshop so i edit all photos in lightroom then if i need to do some extra work in photoshop right click and you can send it over to photoshop

as for learning photoshop try youtube for videos and other tutorial sites there better then books i find due to always being updated and stuff

You must be flush!(assuming you bought PS). Could have saved several hundred pounds buying Elements.

No I didn't buy it, although it's not illegal either, a friend had some licences paid for and had a few going spare, it's also the master collection. Lots of other software in there that I don't even know what it does yet lol.

Elements is nowhere near as good though. Its okay for basic stuff.

Books; would recommend Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers by Scott Kelby. He is a bit 'unfunny' at times, with his poor humour, but he does know his stuff. :)

^ What he said.

There are loads of online tutorials out there. Everytime you come across something you can't do or have an idea and no idea how to go about it, just google it and something will come up. Practice makes perfect - don't expect to get anything amazing straight away.

My favourite book is Photoshop CS3 for Photographers by Martin Evening. (assuming you want it for picture editing, it you want a recommendation for Graphic design, I pass)

I also have a load of online resources I check, but they are bookmarked at home...

Go here, and watch the tutorials. Don't waste your money on a book, its a much quicker learning curve to see the mouse click necessary if you lose track of what the tutorial is saying.

yeah that does seem a good idea, i like the idea that i can watch it being done. seen a couple online tutorials but it was just pictures and wasn't very good. cheers

There are some nice training Vids available on Lynda.com with an annoying American in but you gota pay for em.

I'd have to disagree tbh. Most, and in this case in particular, never come close to justifying buying, or even just owning, PS. Ergo, Elements is more than capable.

And your recommendations for online tutorials or books are ....

Elements is capable, but anyone serious about their photography will use Lightroom and/or CS3 as they are considerably better packages.

:)

Perhaps you should read before suggesting he should have bought something else.
Why would I need to when I read it perfectly competently the first time? Perhaps it is you that seems to have misread something.

The OP said:

I made the natural assumption at this POINT, like most would, that he purchased PS.
I then expressed MY opinion that for a 2 week beginner, Elements would be more than capable. Which it would.

You then intimate that the OP acquired PS because he believes he is serious enough to warrant it.
In reality, he most likely has it because he has taken advantage of an freebie offer, itself cheaper than even Elements.

On the face of his words he didn't 'already' have PS - he acquired at the time of this post, some time after owning an SLR.

Perhaps you should consider keeping the thread on track rather than offering pugnacious replies....

Perhaps you assume too quickly? Correct me if I am wrong, but he said he already had PS? He also wanted help with how to use it? So how does that warrant a response questioning the legality of his software and suggesting he take it back and buy another piece of software that he may still need a book for? Just because someone does not know how to use something does not mean they should not have it.

Now you suggest I keep this on track, but no offence, I suggested a really good book that would be of use, and others have left some great resources too. What have you added ... I rest my case. Instead you have thown your toys out of the pram because I suggested Elements was inferior to PS.

Who's questioning legality? The only person who raised that issue was the OP. My 1st post bracketed reference was based on the possibility of owning PS by 'some' means other than paying.
No one suggested he couldn't try and use PS, warranted or not. My point was one of surprise, and as the OP is a newcomer, he may not have been aware of Elements. Ergo I feel I may have been informing him of this. Perhaps this could be resolved by actually asking the OP!

Posting reasonable advice doesn't absolve you from inciting other posters. The derailing of the thread isn't based on which links have or haven't been posted. It's based on those looking (presumably) for a good ol' spat, of which I'm not. I feel like have a good rapport with this forum and the majority of its members. I'm uninterested in being lured into forum spats, and if you are (which seems so), I'd suggest relocating to the Motors section.

As for throwing toys out prams, I think most would agree, the statement most indicative of that is:
Perhaps you should read before suggesting.....
I.e. this was you that started inciting, presumably as a response that someone has a differing opinion. But why you think you need to suggest the superiority of PS alludes me, it being an established fact. Are you a PS sales rep?
Even if you can't, I'm going to apologise to the OP, and hopefully a mod will surface and erase this nonsense.
