Hi everyone first post so go gentle on me.

My scenario is i need to upgrade my computer now that i am dealing with bigger files in PSE 11. I am not planning to upgrade to CS6 anytime soon as PSE does everything i need Pano Stich, layers and ACR editing with a few lens correction filters and effects. The images are RAW files from a D600 Nikon camera if that also helps. I will be venturing into Video (hd1080p) soon so being able to tinker at the mo will do. (can always upgrade it later)

Now i am looking at an i5 or i7 and want it future proof. The big question is do i use onboard graphics or go for a Nvidia 650/660. I am under the impression PSE does not utilize the GPU so a better CPU and RAM and SSD drive would be better. I cant seam to find a straight forward answer online for Elements. Also will the bigger processor be a worthy upgrade.

Basic spec i was thinking
i5 3570k or i7 3770k
16gb 1333mhz cl9 ram
Gigabyte GA z77x d3h
500w psu
USB 3.0 case (not sure at mo)
120gb Kingston 120gb 3k ssd (to run OS, PSE and as a scratch disc for images to be edited (approx 200 max at a time @ 25 - 30mb ea)
my existing sata3 2tb drives (back up storage)
DVD drive
Card reader
2 x 24" 1920 x 1080p monitors (soon to be a 27" 2560 x 1440 + 2 24" 1080p's)

Now will on board graphics run what i have now or do i need a GPU. What GPU would be best ? Advice on this build and spec (overall not just GPU and CPU) would be greatly appreciated

Regards

Pete

What is your budget?

  • i7 will be useful in the long run.
  • Great IPS monitors, really good colour accuracy.
  • Really nice case, although may not be to your liking.
  • Good (Gigabyte) motherboard.
  • Modular PSU, silent aswell.
  • Great CPU cooler for your overclocking needs.
From what I've seen, a graphics card provides no gain in Elements, however it does in CS4+. So if you are thinking of going to CS6 anytime soon, you may want a graphics card (preferably AMD as they have OpenGL, which is what Photoshop uses instead of Nvidias equivalent - CUDA).

Minus the monitors and cooler, and this is what you get:

I'm a bit confused, do you already have the monitors or do you need some? Because if that's the case, it's gonna be hard to get a build with a i5 (let alone i7) with 2 monitors.

Got the monitors already and everything else. Running on a (well more crawling) AMD x4 9500 at mo and its not a happy bunny.

This is roughly what i specced

^ You'd be better off getting the samsung 830 as the 840 none pro, had poor write speeds in comparison and price. I would suggest the Crucial M4 256GB or Corsair GT series for very fast speeds. I'd also switch that PSU out for something like below?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 256GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT256M4SSD2) £164.99
1 x Corsair Force GT 120GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CSSD-F120GBGT-BK) £105.98

1 x Seasonic G series 550w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £76.99

That's my 2 cents, the rest looks fine! :)

And windows 8 flew up in price, glad I snagged it at £25!

Cheers guys points noted and appreciated. Just out of interest why the better PSU surely power is power, is it just a noise thing or do the cheaper ones have other issues?

The components in the OcUK PSU's aren't the best shall we say. One day it'll go bang, and most likely take other components with it.
The case could also be better as the Elite 430 isn't the best feature wise.
