Photoshop help - change background please?

how would i change the background colour from black to say red? When i do this in photoshop, the text colour changes slightly (text borders) making text hard to read?

You don't try and change the background, simply make a new layer of the colour you want, and play with the "blending" option of the original image/ layer.

In this case "Screen" was getting the end result.
