EDIT: Fixed that issue, but now I've got another problem!

I had to close the file I was working on, so I saved it and closed, but when I opened it up again, all the layers had been merged into one! How do I separate them again?

It sounds to me as if you have the wrong layer selected. On the right hand side make sure you have the appropriate layer selected before you try to select an area on the photo you are editing.

Quick google shows a few people saying this - "you should know that this isn't a error message, really. It means only that the selection edges aren't visible because the selection is more than 50% transparent. But the selection is still THERE and will be affected by whatever you do next."

If the layers are gone that means you have saved it in a format that does not support layers i.e jpeg , gif , bmp and so forth. I do not believe there is a way to just auto get the layers back. I personally think you have to select each element and create a new layer for it then save it in a format that supports layers.

You'll only be able to operate in layers if you saved the file as a .psd i believe, all other formats will merge the image

sorry it wasn't actually a whole lot of help. If you are new to Photoshop take a look over at http://www.tutorialized. com I have been using this site for about 15 years now when I run into problems or am looking for new ideas. Currently learning how to use 3D studio max on this site quite a pain in the a** though :/

You must have saved in a format that doesn't support layers. Always save in PSD format until your work is done.
