Photoshop:How do I replicate this effect

Play with the hue / saturation controls / colour balance and if you are really feeling adventurous add an adjustment curves layer.

Surely a bit of hue/sat & colour balance wouldn't reproduce that effect would it?!

All depends on the image, but I personally would do that for starters. Then play with the other colour adjusting tools. It will be trial and error to get that effect and different pictures will be easier to replicate it on than others.

A crude way of achieving that look could be to:
1. desaturate the original picture to B&W
2. adjust contrast to make it punchy
3. add gradient overlay (cyan tone at top, copper(ish) colour at bottom), adjust until it looks about right.
4. add a fake vignette look

I've had a quick pop at any old photo and this method works quite well.. It's a bit of work though. Personally I don't see the appeal
