I keep replacing parts on my current comp so to save some money in the long run think its time to build a new one from scratch and not having built a full machine for a long time I’m out of touch on what gear to go for and need some help if possible.

All I really need it for is photoshop, not really into serious gaming.
I was thinking of something like the I7 950 and maybe 12 gig of ram but other than that I’m totally lost.

Can salvage some parts from current computer to save a bit of cash

Q6600, Asus P5KC, 8gig RAM, 8800 GTS, Coolit Eco, Corsair 420HX, 60gig crucial SSD, fractal R2 case.

Thanks.
Shaun

Thanks guys.

Going to order tomorrow but just got a couple more questions (sorry for been annoying).

Will get the

Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz
Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58

Really think I should get 12gig of ram but not sure wether to get 2 sets of something like the Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel
or
a single set of something like the OCZ Gold Low Voltage 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 10666C9 1333MHz Triple Channel

buying the 3 sticks would mean I could add another 3 sticks in the future if needed.

And for the graphics was thinking that the new lower priced gtx460's would work well as I dont do much gaming?

Would the Be Quiet! Straight Power E7 600W Power Supply do all that and all the other stuff 4x HDD's and blueray burner? or go for something like the Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply on offer this week?

Once again apoligise for all the questions its just so confusing.

Have you got an OS - it'll need to be 64 bit for the memory you want.

Plus - if you are not into serious gaming, you don't need such a powerful graphics card. Almost any card is good for photoshop . Swap it for something cheaper (If you still want to do some gaming - the ATI 5750 is no slouch, and saves £100), and use the money saved on a solid state disk. This will make a big difference to image processing - especially batch processing of photographs.

Think you need to stop your obsession by getting one yourself :)

And yeah RJCs build looks good. Stay away from OCZ gold if you can.

The lower memory 460 should be good for you (Although how many monitors do you use?)

600 Watts should be more than enough for all that.

Cheers,

got W7pro and an SSD already, but really good to know I can save some cash on the graphics card, anythings going to be a step up from the 8800GTS 320mb :)
I'm using 2x 22 Dell 2209WA's if that makes a diffrence.

A 4850 would be plenty for what he needs but no one seems to want to spec anything less than a 5770/460 nowadays.

Not if he want's to use Adobe Mercury Playback Engine as you need a GTX275(with a small hack) min
ATI would have to use software version of Mercury Playback Engine which is very slow.

the 460 would be better than a 5770.

photoshop will make use of Cuda, so a good gpu can be useful

Cuda isn't present in Photoshop, only Premiere. Photoshop uses OpenGL for hardware acceleration and thus will basically run on anything.

Is there really any need for 12gb of ram? 6 is more than enough for me, but I guess I you're editing huge images it would be useful.

I guess its the price drop on the 460's that are swinging me that way :)

tempted by the 12 gig of Ram for the boost in photoshop, got 8gig of DDR2 in machine I'm using now and its really slows when working on large files. Suppose I thought that the cpu and RAM would be the place to spend most of the money.
