Photoshop noob

I have a copy of Photoshop CS2 but I have no experience with this type of software. Looking for a good starting point ie Dummies or online tutorials? Suggestion's welcome.

www.good-tutorials.com has some nice things to try out...deviantart has loads of video tutorials to help you on your way as well

mainly just play around and see what comes up

In following one of the tutorials I have come up against a problem which is probably obvious to the more advanced use but myself :confused:

How can I change the layer styles? ticking a box changes nothing, the image you see remains regardless of box ticked.

Where as in this tutorial the styles change Here

What am I missing or doing wrong?

As well as ticking the box you have to select the style to alter its settings. Just click on the text next to tick boxes.
