I was asked to spec a pc for someone who has a 1K budget.

The primary use was photoshop and cubase with the occasional use for games (where the user generally uses autodetect for set up)

This is what I came up with. Basically quad core and 4gb ram to get the best out of photoshop

Intel CPU Core 2 Quad Core QX6600

Abit AB9 QuadGT

2 x Geil Value DDR2 2.0GB PC6400 Dual Channel memory kit (2 x 1GB)

INNO3D GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB

320GB Seagate Barracuda ATA100 7200rpm 16MB

Pioneer DVR-112DBK Black 18X DVD +/-R/RW DL

Enermax Liberty 500W v2.2 Black PSU ELT500AWT

Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black

Lian Li C-01B Aluminium CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Bezel (Black)

This was bang on budget.

Any recommendations for changes?

the guy doesn't need a monitor, but I agree, there's a saving to be had going with a e6600.

I've not seen any data but I would've though photoshop would see a nice boost from quad core.

Also, why that mobo? Surely a DS3/P5B.. And why no overclock?

I'm not building it and the guy and the builder are not overclockers (at least they can later on if they want)

Just heard a few good comments lately on that board but a DS3 or P5B would also make good choices. DS3 is about £20 cheaper I suppose. Any other arguments for these over the Abit?

Not sure pioneer make a sata writer and I have a lot of faith in pioneer dvd writers. What would you suggest?

As far as I know Pioneer do not make any DVD-Burners, they are all rebranded NEC drives.

NEC For the Win! :)

really given the price of the 320 mb one (perhaps not at ocuk) , you'd be mad not to.

@wayne. Are you sure that pioneers are rebranded NEC's? A bit of digging suggests they typically use NEC chipsets but they don't make the drives for them.
