I've got some mobile wallpapers and want to put my name over the top with the transparent/negative effect reversing the colour behind. I can add the text layer no worries, but how do I centre the text/layer?

Here's one almost in the middle by hand:

Never thought about that, I was just about to post saying it's always an odd number, but just realised to can right click on the ruler and put it to percentage(%).

I should use the ruler more often.

in the layers panel, select both the text you want aligned, and the background image layers by holding ctrl and clicking each layer. once both are selected, select the move tool (v) and in the tool options bar, at the top of the screen, will be some alignment buttons, have a play, and you will soon work out which ones will give you the desired positioning.

this is easily the best way, no point using rulers... for an exact centrepoint with text tho you'd better convert to outlines so the slightly larger bounding box doesn't interfere ;)

To centre something i press Ctrl + A to select everything, then i select the layer i want centred and go to Layer > Align Layers To Selection > Vertical Centers then go to Layer > Align Layers To Selection again and choose Horizontal Centers.

As I don't just use Photoshop I use a simple but perfect way of doing this. Take the overall width and height of the image, subtract the dimensions of the text then divide by 2. Place the text at this location. Job done :)

Example:

Image: 1280x1024
Text: 150x50

1280-150/2 = Text x position 565
1024-50/2 = Text y position 487

Activate the rulers.

With the arrow tool click and hold on the vertical ruler and then drag to the right. A guide line will move. If you drag it near the centre of the image it should snap to the very center line. Any text, image, object, path, whatever will automatically snap to this guide line. If you want to center the text vertically, do the same but drag the guide from the top ruler.

I find it is quicker than messing about with the align options, as I can set the guides once and leave them there.
