What does this mean - "cannot transform because the initial bounding rectangle is empty"?

Ive got a layer with an object on and Im trying to do a free transform. There is no selection, I just want to "do" the whole layer.

Never had this before in all my days of using Photoshop...

Never had this myself but it seems it thinks that there is nothing to transform...

I suppose you could select the WHOLE layer and see if you have any joy...

I discovered its because I used the eraser to partially remove the middle of the painted circle so it is semi transparent.
Wierd that I cant transform it, I dont see why it should stop me. :(

Oh well, I can work round it, thanks for the replies.

I've just replicated what you described, and it works fine for me. Just a quick question - did you deselect before trying the free transform? If not, and you had a selection on an empty layer, that would explain it i think. Anyhow, hope your workaround worked!

Hi thanks for the reply.
I tried it on a few duplicates of the original layer, they are not empty, they have my "bubble" graphic on it.

Basically, here is what I did to create this bubble:

-create a new layer
-draw a circle with the circular marquee
-paint it white with the paintbrush
-get the eraser tool with a soft edged brush of the same size as the white circle. click twice so the middle becomes semitransparent with the edge being slightly more opaque.
-Now try to free transform that layer with the bubble on.

Doesnt let me do it on PS6 :(

Heres a screenshot:

Well, I really wanted to duplicate the layer and size the duplicates so there are lots of different sized bubbles.
However, I could make them all from scratch, its obviously more time consuming.

I have a more recent version at home so i will see if it does the same thing.
