If you navigate to:

http://www.maccast.com/

you can see the date graphic they use for each new blog entry. How would I go about doing that in photoshop?

Obviously I can do a rounded rectangle using the shape tool but that means it has rounded edges on all 4 corners and the icon only has them on 2 (on the 2 sections).

If you were doing a similar graphic what broad steps would you take?

1. Create a canvas 85*85 pixels with a white background.

2. Select the rounded rectangle tool and create a rounded rectangle to fill the whole canvas.

3. Rasterize the layer just created and duplicate it. You now have two identical rounded rectangles on two separate layers.

4. Choose a colour for each of the rectangles by filling the rounded rectangles. The top layer is the rectangle for the bottom half (of the finished product) and the bottom layer is the rectangle for the top half.

5. Select 26*85 pixels from the pixel destination (0,0) [top right]. With the top layer highlighted press the delete key.

6. Select 2*85 pixels from the pixel destination (0,26). With the top layer highlighted press the delete key. Now select the bottom layer and press the delete key.

You should end up with three layers like this:

Finished!

An easier way to do it...

1. Create a canvas 85*85 pixels with a white background.

2. Select the rounded rectangle tool and create a rounded rectangle to fill the whole canvas.

3. Draw a white line (pencil tool, make the brush size the thickness of the line you want, hold shift when you draw) across the rounded rectangle, so now you have too sections.

4. Choose a colour for each section, and use the paint bucket to fill.

To vary the size of each section, just draw the line higher or lower on the shape. You could put the line on a layer so it's moveable, in case you change your mind.

Finished!

Hate it when people over-complicate simple things ;)
