Hi all,

I am looking to build a PC for a friend. The budget is £500-£600 and requires everything from OS to Monitor.

The PC needs to be able to run >2gb Photoshop files that can be upwards 5k x 5k pixels smoothly. She is currently producing paintings for print and requires it to scan in large canvas and stitch them together via Photoshop.

She also wants to later be able to record videos and edit them via a video editing software (recommendations of which one appreciated)

Having looked around sites they advise 16gb ram and at least an i5.

Main requirements are:
  • OS
  • Monitor
  • Keyboard + Mouse
  • White case (requested)
  • DVD/Bluray drive
  • 16gb RAM?
  • Graphics card? - is this required for photoshop/video editing
  • Motherboard with built in wifi (suggestions of alternatives welcome!)

With regards to storage, would a large SSD and a large HDD be decent enough storage wise and accessing the files?

Please advise if it is doable on this budget or how much would be required to do the above?

Many thanks

Hi and welcome.

I will give this a go (doubt it can be done to be honest).

Are you able to build this PC then? doesnt have to be pre-built?

Hi and thanks - this is a secondary account as I have issues logging on to my other account - hopefully get this sorted by Monday as the password reset request doesn't load for me. (have emailed admins for assistance).

Would be awesome if you could for the price - if you can get it near to the price that would be ideal, might be able to stretch the budget a little beyond the £600 but not massively.

I have built a pc previously in the last 3 years or so with help from the forum, was for gaming, had a few hiccups but overall it all came together. Should be able to build again this time I hope and hopefully a lot quicker.

Thanks in advance.

• IPS panel monitor, good colours/contrast etc over a standard TN panel.
• Onboard GFX in the CPU so hook the monitor up via DVI to the board.

There is a windows10 technical preview that can be used for a few months and an OS bought later.

No WiFi, either add a USB dongle or PCi-E add-in card.

An APU has a ok GFX core and you get OpenCL acceleration with some apps.

APUs like fast RAM hence the faster RAM as the GFX core relies on it.

Thanks for the fast response!

Out of the two builds listed, what would you recommend be the best for efficiency and smooth running? Also what would you recommend to make it better and how much would be required?

I would take the i5 with the bigger SSD (guess it depends on how many programs she uses and how big their install size are).

No point getting faster RAM for the H61 chipset as thats the maximum it supports and with just two RAM slots you may as well get it filled up with the maximum rather than a 8Gb kit.

Using the Win10 preview will help reduce the costs and worry about that later on.

Thanks, hoping to Order this on Saturday for building early next week.

Her main focus will be using the PC for photoshop, she has stressed that it needs to be able to handle the large canvas files that will be scanned in as .TIF format. In terms of programs she will be using photoshop primarily with web browsing/multiple tabs.

Hey Stulid,

Thanks again for the replies.

The Mobo is out of stock - as is the keyboard - i have opted for the £10+ gigabyte alternative. I have managed to get the budget up to £700 - so far my basket contains:

edit - forgot the PSU

of the above. Any suggestions for a replacement Mobo? I have swapped the Samsung SSD.

Thanks in advance.

As a person who does use LR and PS myself(I use a D600 ATM and have done 35MM negative/slide scanning in the past),I would say you should be looking for as good a monitor as you can afford, with regards to colour accuracy and make sure you calibrate it too. Its no point trying to fine tune colour and tonalty if what you see on screen is not what you expect to get in print.
