Photoshopping techniques(blend different resolutions of two added pictures)

Adding say a face to a different picture is easy enough, however there is always an obvious difference as the two pictures have different lighting, resolutions and various other tech differences. Now if you applied say a b & w filter then you pretty much wouldn't notice the difference if done well.

However is there a way to sample say the background picture intelligently and somehow apply a filter to the added picture(face in this example) so that the two would blend. I know you can just play around with levels and other features/filters but is there a way to actually sample one picture and somehow apply this filter to the added picture?
 
Not really anything that simple no. The healing tool that can take image information from one file and add it to a second but keep the existing colouration of the second file but it's not great really.
 
I usually get a lot of success by keeping the blended portion on a separate layer and then messing with things like Levels, Curves, Noise etc. to try and get a close match.
