Php code help

[I get around]

Well a while ago I used a php function to insert a file of code into my html pages.
like you'd have html and then say for the navigation you'd use a php function to retrieve the html code for it from one file so it'd be the same code on all pages.

Can anyone jog my memory because i haven't a clue what it was?
