Hi,

Hopefully I am posting this in the correct section.

I have just graduated from University and have an interview as a PHP developer. I may be getting a little ahead of myself but I am wondering what are the opportunities for a PHP developer?

From looking at a couple of job sites there does not appear to be a great demand for PHP developers and I don't wish to spend a number of years learning and developing a skill that will not be useful. Perhaps the lack of jobs is only a geographical situation there may be more demand in other locations.

Thanks in advance for any advice. :)

Microsoft languages are in much higher demand.
You'd be better off learning asp.net than php if you want to find a job.

Its sad but true :(

Using C# will give you a wider array of opportunities as well. A lot enterprisey systems such as ERP systems now use C#, which allow you then to go work for a consulting/professional services company(Accenture, EDS, fujitsu Systems etc) if you wish, if you don't mind stress and traveling for a lot of money. Php Web Development is so saturated.

There's a fair amount of jobs for it, but also a massive glut of people that can do it. So much so that companies expect (unrealistically) to be able to hire proper Software Engineers* to code PHP at half the going rate for a Java/.NET developer.

Java/.NET are the most corporate and in demand language/platforms. If you wan't to find some smaller shop then Ruby/Python are your best bet.

*i.e. people with real understanding of patterns, methodologies etc
