PHP - Image cannot be found

When a use register they can define a url for thier profile picture.

eg:

http://www.mypicishere.com/images/mypic.PNG

Is there a way in PHP so if this image does not exist, then I can do something about it, like say "The image cannot be found here"?

Get Snoopy, fetch the image, then check the status code the webserver returns (or just check if the result is an image).
