PHP - SQL Database example

I'm trying to convince someone to move away from multiple Excel documents being emailed about and have suggested a SQL database with a PHP frontend would be a suitable method.

The data will be human resources, stock control, purchasing etc. & ofc reporting of this.
I cannot find any good online examples of this to show them what on earth I am talking about.

Does anyone know of anything suitable that can be shown ?

surely the best thing would be to take those spreadsheets turned in to sql tables and knock up a rough front end to give them a brief overview of what it can do?

would gdocs be an option, should be able to 90% of what the excel sheets do whilst being in a central location, and you can build some decent reports too.

php + mysql is great but you have to think about how they will use it, what happens when it breaks and you don't have time to fix it, that kinda stuff.
