has anyone used them???

I'm waiting for the new Asus P5N32-E 680i mobo to be available, and then another 7900 and i'm tempting one of them in the 3rd PCI-E slot

has anyone used one yet and notices the advantages? or are they a marketign ploy?

i'm looking at the BFG one:

BGF Physx Accelerator

They're still useless, give them time. :) Do yourself a favour in the meantime and get your second graphics card, or upgrade to 2GB RAM. Both of those options will offer a much better performance increase across the board.

Agreed, more RAM for starters. Physics acceleration isn't quite there yet...

games that use these come out feb starting with unreal 2007

BUT if you have sli systeam and use the 90.xx drivers nvidia say they use the other card to do pysics so could be a route to go down

I was gonna say "how do you know how much ram he has, he has said".

Then i checked his sig, and............... DUDE, change the colour of the specs in yer sig, i didn't even see the ram line!

Or is it just me.

By the by, are the accelerators supposed to help out with DX 10 enabled stuff?

There's already a couple of half-decent titles that use PhysX, but even UT2K7 won't justify blowing £200 on one. :)

I had to select it with my mouse to read it. :p

Nope, not in the slightest. DirectX, Ageia PhysX, and HavokFX for that matter, have nothing to do with eachother.

when they come down to £100 get one then prob get one when unreal 2007 comes out as i tend to play that game no end

PPUs aren't totally useless... games which use proper cloth physics and fluid dynamics will not run playable on just the CPU... however aside from the cell factor beta nothing really does that yet, COH has some basic fluid dynamics but they aren't frequent enough or complex enough to have a huge performance impact, most CPUs can easily handle 100s of proper physics objects and 1000s of physics particles without major slow downs, which is more than any traditional game is going to use at any one time, so until games start using levels where every brick of each building, etc. is a full physics object you simply don't need a PPU.

haven't ATI & nVidia gone their own way with using Gfx cards as physics cards?

I remember somewhere that an old X1600 was supposed to be better at physics stuff than an Ageia?

Ageias PhysX PPU has the hardware potential to be much better at physics simulation than a GPU would be.

Yup thats right, HAVOK is what they doing, you can use any card from any range solely as a physics card, so you could pair an x1950 pro (or any ATi card) with an x1600 (or any other ATi card), and have the x1600 (or whatever other card you have) solely used as a physics card, or 2x x1950's in crossfire (or any others in Crossfire), and an x1600 (or again any other card) as well solely as a physics card. :)

Potential is one thing..... realising it within a price bracket is another!
Sapphire X1600 Pro 256MB- £61
BFG Ageia PhysX Accelerator - Retail BFG Ageia PhysX Accelerator - Retail -£129.24

Hell, you can get an X1950pro for the price of the PhysX! And how much would a PhysX card cost that could outperform a X1900Xt..... rated at 9x the performance of the current PhysX card?

What has happened to Pottsey??? LOL

I wonder what the story is with the DX10 cards and this HAVOK physics implimentation - can you use a DX9 card as the Physics card?

Don't see why not as its not going to be used for rendering or effects, purely physics calcs.

An X1900XT is not 9x the performance of a current PhysX card at physics. ATI rate there cards in gigaflops which has little do to do with how fast you are at physics. ATI have more gigaflops but it doesn’t automatically make them faster. That like saying my 256meg card is faster then your 128meg card.

Also Havok FX and ATI so far have no game support. Havok FX has been out a long time now and no developers seem to want to support it.

As for buying a PPU unless you have games that support it dont get one. It not useless and works in the few games it supports.

The children at work have been very lively the past few days and not had time to browse the forums.
