Ray of good light for you Pottsey (and us as I quite like the things!)

Dell m1730 Spec

The stock graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GO 8700M GT, though you can opt to add the Ageia PhysX Controller

Looks like these might start to appear again - be interesting to see how much the add in costs and how many people go for them. I know they've been bundled with machines before, and that didn't take, but who knows, with the upcoming releases, we might just see critical mass for these misunderstood workhorses :) Certainly can't hurt the balance sheet to be linked in with Dell!

I don't really know what the specs are capable off, I just refer to the majority of Dell as crappy and overpriced.

Hell of a generalization covering what was (until this year) the world's largest supplier of PCs - clearly your opinion is not shared by the majority!

From my personal experience, both with the hardware and the support, I have to say that Dell laptops (specifically the XPS range that gets extra loving from their Tech guys) are 1st rate bits of kit that are extremely well made, generously spec'd, and well priced (if you know how to get a good deal!) I was unable to match spec/price/performance anywhere else! How many XPS's have you owned?

the key word being OPT which means purchase that option at an extra price. they need to force that card on people other than to offer it to be able to make any sales from it.

Dells are good pc's if all you want is a low spec pc to do work on etc. But onec you start going into the higher figures where dell pretends that their pcs are for gaming thats where they become rip offs for people that dont know anything about pcs.

However their laptops do not follow this trend, they seem to generaly be well prices. But tbh i cant unstand why anyonewould by then... mmm is it XPS laptop??? they are 100/200 quid more then the vostro for the same thing??? what am i missing? lol.

I'd rather custom build than be told what I get and pay more for no reason. :)

If you can custom build a laptop to the the spec/quality of my XPS (Yes - the 1710/2010 laptops are called XPS as well ;)) Then you sir would have my 'system builder' respect. Until I see the pudding containing the proof - I call male cow excrement! ;)

Fixed. There is nothing wrong with their laptops.

See above on the XPS also = laptop thing!

The better GFX card on the XPS is what you're paying for.

Following on from the charming personal attacks (none taken) this is a thread about Dell laptops and PhysX cards so let's try to keep it to that :p

No offence, but people who buy DELL's ain't got a clue and have way to much money to waste.;)

I buy Dell machines for a LOT of people, if you think I don't have a clue then how about this:

Core 2 Duo processor
1gb DDR2
320gb HDD
DVD/RW
Onboard sound and graphics (it was for a relative, they're not a gamer, but it has empty PCI-E and PCI slots)
Optical mouse
Keyboard
1yr B2B warranty
Windows Vista Business

And the price? £182 inc. Vat and delivery ...

If I'm such an idiot, spec me a machine for the same price (including legitimate operating system).

Absolutely nothing wrong with Dell machines. It's their technical support that sucks. The systems in my classroom for my animation course at uni are dual Xeon with 2GB RAM and they are nice and quick to say the least.

On the whole Dell is cheap, but high end is expensive, saying that, try putting your own rig together with that spec and come up with a price you will pay? it is tough.....

While I agree the XPS 710 and 720 are way overpriced, and they are taking the **** with the crippled nvidia chipet I do believe their next one down (9200) is superb value as are the midrange inspiron desktops both amd and intel models (530 and 531). And you don't have to buy an XPS to enjoy high end gaming either. Though I can understand the people who would as money may not be a factor or they do not have the interest or knowledge to build their own system.

As well as a homemade gaming pc like everyone else here I also have a Dimension 9200. Why ? It's a 2nd gaming PC first of all, and second I could not build it for less...because the deals Dell give are so good...try building a 965P,Q6600 G0,8800gtx,1tb drive, 2gig ddrr2, 22" screen,X-Fi and Vista Ultimate for under a grand. You can't. So this is a gaming system but not expensive in my book. Sure, you can't overclock, and their mobos are more or less proprietry btx, but the pc is dead reliable, you can upgrade the psu (standard atx) hence buy a more powerful graphics card if you want, and at the price they are, it's good value. Plus they are reasonably quiet, and the btx design/cooling is superb. Also, all the components are as good as anything you will get from an etailer. For example the X-Fi they sell now has proper optical outputs like the Azuntech, they get the Intel new steppings before everyone else, and pretty much have high end video cards close to the day you can buy them online. There is no way I could build for less then what I could buy it from Dell, especially with the way they include monitors so cheaply. Recently they were doing a 9200 and a 24" 2407 was only an extra 200 quid. If I could have built it cheaper I would have. Direct PC manufacturers margins in the consumer desktop space are very very tight, and they rely on volume, and since they buy so many components in bulk, the price they sell their pc's to the public is very hard to match with a diy. This was not always the case. But appears to be now.

I think some people on this thread are generalising with their comments and insulting a lot of customers who are happy with the Dell brand. But I do agree their sli rigs are way overpriced. And I am not fond of their tech support, but it's not something I would be relying on. Buy a Dell system if you want a good value, powerful gaming rig is what I say or just want something to wordprocess on. For the enthusiast or overclocker, building is still the way to go.

Just because they come with crappy Dell machines doesn't mean developers will wanna support it.

Considering the market penetration dell machines have, they might support it ? Who knows.

I also know many people with "crappy Dell machines" that easily match your spec or beat it. And were probably cheaper to buy. Does that mean they are not crappy anymore ?
Your comment seems a bit useless.
